With a small delay because of the first ever Mystery Coffee League meet-up in the Netherlands, it's finally a time to learn the details about April Mystery Coffee from Banibeans 🇸🇮.
Here are the details about past month's coffee:
🇵🇦 Panama Finca Hartmann
Region: Santa Clara
Variety: Geisha
Processing: Natural
Altitude: 1600-2000 masl
Tasting notes: jasmine, orange, strawberry yogurt (mapped to strawberry)
Harvest: 2022
About the coffee:
Today Finca Hartmann is a family enterprise – each member of the family is passionately involved in the management and performs a different function in the growth, production and tourism of the farm. Coffee for them is a way of living, their culture, their family – a lot of work, but also a lot of love. Their employees come return every year, as do their buyers, because they like their vision: work together with nature, work the land without destroying it.
The finca consists of 2 farms – Santa Clara Finca Hartmann and Ojo de Agua, located between 1.300 and 2.000 mts above sea level with nearly 100has of forest reserves bordering on the Parque Nacional de La Amistad. The coffee is grown under the shade of native rainforest trees that have been there for many years.
The Hartmann family is considered one of the pioneers of the specialty coffee production in Panama. Their story starts with Alois Strasil Hartmann, born in 1891 in the region of Moravia, then Austrian-Hungarian empire (you might understand our personal affinity to this finca), laid the ground work for Finca Hartmann, which was founded by his son, Ratibor Hartmann, in 1940. Today Finca Hartmann is a family enterprise – each member of the family is passionately involved in the management and performs a different function in the growth, production and tourism of the farm.
Message from Luka:
When Dawid contacted me last October and confirmed that I would be part of the Mystery Coffee League with my coffee, I started looking for coffee quite quickly. I wasn't following the Discord group at the time and I kind of wanted to find something that would surprise everyone. In January, a supplier from Brazil hosted a cupping in Slovenia of Vinhal Farm, which many of you are probably already familiar with. To be honest, I was very impressed by the coffees, I immediately ordered two coffees and the idea was that one of them would be the Mystery Coffee. What followed was a rather stressful period of waiting for the coffee as the delivery date changed from week to week. Fortunately, the coffee arrived in Slovenia on 24.3. and I roasted one of the coffees the very next day. On Sunday 26.3. I tasted the coffee for the first time and, as I had also been following Discord since December to March, the coffee somehow did not live up to my expectations. Since in the meantime of following the Discord group I realised that maybe Brazil was not really the best choice, I had a back option from the beginning, which was Finca Hartmann natural geisha. Since I was not satisfied with the coffee from Brazil, I went to Salzburg early in the morning on 27.3. (on a day when I should have been roasting) to get the most "prestigious" coffee ever offered by Banibeans.
